13/07: Day in the Life of the ASM
Hi everyone!
It's Will, the assistant stage manager for "Creating Claire" (see previous post). Here's a fairly typical day for me as an intern.
7:50 - Alarm goes off, hit snooze.
8:00 - Get out of bed, shower, etc.
8:15 - Add finishing touches to possible future intern play.
8:50 - Send play to self on email.
9:01 - Bike to downtown Osterville. Park bike at library, go inside, borrow U2's "Joshua Tree" album.
9:17 - Meet Alex (fellow intern) in parking lot.
9:18 - Rock out to "Joshua Tree" on car stereo.
9:31 - Rehash last night's cocktail part Benefit Ball.
9:54 - Arrive at Falmouth Academy (HQ).
9:55 - Say hi to everyone. Try to print out play. Fail miserably. Printer error.
9:59 - Give up printing job. Begin intern meeting outside by discussing ideas for play, etc.
10:15 - Told that interns are making a loud ruckus outside. Move across street and continue ruckus.
10:31 - Think up idea for play based on "Seven Sins."
10:35 - Listen to "Who Are You" on Riley's iTunes.
11:05 - Meet Celia (see previous post).
11:15 - Hole-punch 9 copies of 97-page script. Place scripts in binders.
11:30 - Arrange scripts in classroom on second floor.
11:42 - Talk with Clyde about stuff.
11:46 - Clyde mentions discrimination case filed by Woods Hole scientist who refused to believe in evolution.
11:57 - Actors/CCTP family enter classroom. Introductions.
12:03 - Actors begin first read-through of "Creating Claire"
12:15 - Out-of-body experience involving awe at being in presence of incredibly talented actors
12:35 - Become convinced that Celia is perfect for her role as Abigail.
12:36 - Realize ditto for all the other actors.
1:00 - Break. Pass around menu for Cape Cod Bagels, take orders.
1:07 - Head out to above sandwich shop with head volunteer Jim.
1:11 - Place most complicated/confusing order in Cape Cod Bagels' history. Have intense thoughts of inferiority/worthlessness.
1:20 - Return to CCTP with chow.
1:30 - First read-through ends.
1:50 - Begin discussion of main themes of play/background information.
1:55 - Learn about huge variability in autism (good from dramatist point of view).
2:01 - Explain higgs boson particle and Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Fool everyone into thinking I'm a science nerd.
2:15 - Make huge pot of coffee. Way too much water. Takes about 40 minutes to brew. Pot nearly overflowing. Below average quality.
2:35 - Mention God After Darwin. More stares.
3:00 - Break. Look up times for bus from Falmouth to Woods Hole. Realize I have two options for getting back to Osterville: 5:15 bus (cutting it close) or 6:30 bus. Decide I must make 5:15 bus.
4:59 - End of rehearsal. Dash out of Falmouth Academy.
5:01 - Check directions to Clock Tower provided by Christine. Rehearse directions in head.
5:08 - Stop at red light. Wait for signal for pedestrians to cross. Unbelievably impatient.
5:13 - Become convinced I won't make the bus.
5:17 - Flag down bus as it leaves parking lot of Mall. Enter bus sweaty and out-of-breath but overjoyed.
5:17:30 - Realize I just ran 1.6 miles on sidewalks in non-running attire and made the bus.
5:18 - Ask every passanger if they can break a $5 bill. Success.
6:00 - Arrive in Osterville.
6:22 - Arrive at home.
Only a sample of my daily adventures as a CCTP intern. And to think I'll have to do it all over again tomorrow!
See you soon,
Will
